Hello im new here so hope this is in the correct section. I recently purchased a 94 960 3.0 estate and was wondering if it had sips, it has the letters pressed into the sill tops but unsure what else to look for? If it does have is it ok to use seat covers? sound silly but I read something to the contrary.
Hi, it won't have side airbags on that year. No problem using seat covers. SIPS stands for side impact protection system, which basicly means bracing bars in the doors to help stop the doors caving in on side impact.
SIPS involves "a further strengthening of the B-pillar, a reinforced door sill and roof rail and strengthening of the floor members." These structural safety enhancements were introduced from 1992. Or so it says in a Volvo press release in 1991... Side airbags were a later enhancement to Volvo SIPS and I'm unsure whether your car would have 'em. If you do have side airbags - seat covers should not be used if those bags deploy out the side of the seat.
